About the BAHNON National Patient Information Survey

Aims and objectives

Project Schedule

Report from survey

Each information booklet returned in the survey was reviewed according to basic reviewer guidelines and given a score. Here is the scoring guide.

Gaps were identified by also using a checklist "Questions patients ask" developed by the Cancer Collaborative Service Improvement Patient Information Team. Here is the checklist

You may find these useful when reviewing and developing your own information.

We have now have on the website 84 examples of patient information on a variety of topics for you to access when developing your own information. These are NOT intended to be downloaded directly for patients. They are mainly fairly poor quality photocopies which have been scanned in. However, many national resources are identified on the website which you can easily access. You may well find that you do not need to develop your own information because national information is of very high quality (e.g. NALC laryngectomy information, Cancerbacup survivorship information, Changing Faces social rehabilitation information).

The information booklets are linked to the stages of the information pathway at which they should be provided. It is important that information is provided at the right time. Good information provision is much more than handing the patient a booklet. A skilled practitioner is needed as high level communication skills are needed in order to assess the patient's information requirements and to provide the emotional and psychological support that goes alongside it. Teams therefore also need to consider staff training and staffing levels.

Please also consult the Cancer Collaborative website information on providing patient information.

BAHNON are very grateful indeed for all those nurses who responded to the survey and sent in information. If your information has not been included, and you think it would add to the collection (especially if it's on a topic not currently covered) please do post it to us so we can add it:

In the future, we would like to explore developing a comprehensive electronic database of national standard information to replace the many locally produced booklets on subjects which are frequently replicated in many centres, but of varying quality. We would welcome more ideas on this!
